PREFACE

What we call life, through its constant flux of change can be said to be only a series of death. We lose the most valuable moments to obtain wealth, credit, fame and a lover, but these are just decorations of our ego. They all crumble down when finally death appears. What we call life, is an occasion, a chance, an opportunity to discover the real life.

Sri Swami Shyamendra’s literature, lectures, tapes, and his close proximity are an invaluable help for our discovery of real life.

What society calls life is but a seed. When it is sown, watered–it sprouts, is nurtured, grows and blossoms into a flower. This is what God is. It is always extremely fragrant. It is always intoxicatingly blissful, love-filled, wisdom-filled and highly energetic. To these various breezes of perfumes we call Mother consciousness, Shiva consciousness, Cosmic consciousness etc.

The search for the Absolute Truth is a search for deeper mysteries of life and existence. The mystery is unknown and unacquainted. This darkness of ignorance is too painful to all intellectuals.

In the absence of this search entire humanity is standing on the cliff of a bottomless abyss of a dangerous madness or dreadful destruction.

Today the height of spirituality, words of enlightened beings, the way of life of realized saints, are becoming imaginary stories, mythologies. Those who talk of amazing miracles of Yoga and Tantra are looked at with eyes of suspicion and people label them as orthodox or fool. Even the possibility of existence of Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Lord Buddha and Lord Shankara has become doubtful today. On top of this, scientists, socialists, communists, are prepared with step-by-step plans to destroy dharma (the integrated way of life) and meditation related culture. Not only this, even modern civilization (Western culture) which is spreading too fast around the world like a wild fire also is fully prepared to destroy the meditation oriented culture and enlightened life style.

In such a terribly sad and sorrowful situation, the only remedy to global gloom I have discovered, is to present a full fledged commentary on Dharma Sutras and presentation of Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Lord Buddha in a globally enlightened, Intergalactic perspective. Unless I do so and until you receive it, the entire race of mankind is on the verge of sinking in a directionless, oblivion . The age of ever-expanding darkness of misunderstanding of almost everything is like a blackhole ready to devour the confused humanity today.

INTRODUCTION

 

Chanakya, an incomparable prophet of Life, living in the 2nd Century BC, has saved humanity from millions of problems and tensions by his counseling on social communication and domestic interaction. Most of you are informed about his formulas contained in “Everybody’s Guide to Behavioral Common Sense” released in our newsletter “Sudden Enlightenment Cozy Corner“. But hardly anyone knows of his telegraphic power words (these are words that are potent and generate great energy through understanding) which are about the basic laws of integrated consciousness-The Dharma Sutras. Therefore in order to give benefit and enrichment to your life, here I am presenting my commentary on his power words.

Yes, commentary, because Sanskrit is no longer an international language. Also because the original Formulas are in coded Sanskrit words. Not only has translation become necessary, but since human perspective and common values of life too have changed, commentary has become compulsory. Hence this presentation will be a derivative of the original Sanskrit, which was then put into Roman script, then translation, and finally my commentary. I hope this will be enjoyable for you.

sukhasya mulam dharmah

TRANSLATION:

The origin of happiness is Dharma or

Dharma is the source of happiness.

COMMENTARY

 

The human mind is restless. Its restlessness is a constant search for happiness. Regardless of all what he is doing it is only to find greater and greater peace/happiness to settle down somewhere in bliss consciousness.

The happiness which is sensational, enticing and exciting in the beginning but miserable, tense and frustrating in the end is generally mistaken by literate people as the only happiness. The pleasure of drugs, laziness and sleep is loved by illiterates. But real happiness is that which may be a little difficult at the start but is nectarine and evolves as permanent joy inner and outer both.

The source of such happiness is attained by adopting the Dharma way. Dharma is the fundamental laws of creation, which sustains and nurtures the structure of integration of life.

Food, sleep, sex-like joys are available to all even in the animal kingdom. As a human we have responsibility to discover the real tangible happiness, hence Dharma comes.

Gita says—When rise of evil and decline of Dharma takes place and as a consequence people begin to suffer on a large scale. The Divine incarnates to establish the fundamental laws of everlasting happiness.

dhri dharayatiti dharmah

Which upholds the humanness in the individual life and throughout the universe is called Dharma.

At the completion of 100,000 verse long Intergalactic History Chronicle the author exclaims—

Raising my both arms up I proclaim that it is Dharma alone from which financial progress and lasting peace are born, why don’t you abide by Dharma?

What is Dharma?

Vaisesik philosophy defines—

yatobhyuday nisreyas siddhih sa dharmah

From which you progress in life both materially and spiritually and not only now but also life after life, that is Dharma.

Now question arises, what are those actions, interactions, responses, feelings and ideas by which structure of Dharma is composed of?

Sage Bhrigu in his Manusmriti writes— non-hurtfulness, three dimensional honesty (physical, mental and emotional), non-misappropriation, outer and inner cleanliness and non-sensational attitude are common Dharma for all four classes of general population which means philosophical, warrior, commercial, labor oriented ones. Elaborating the symptoms of Dharma Manu says—

Lady or man of Dharma could be characterized as emanating the perfume of patience or non-restlessness, tolerance, organized senses, sincerity, non-possessive to what does not belong to you legally, staying immaculately pure inside and clean outside, staying alert and smart, being educated, honesty, inner peace, and having only one wife or husband and having sex only once a month only at the end of menstruation. These are the ten common characteristics of Dharma.

Like other subjects there are different grades of education in Dharma. In order to have happiness of being healthy, undefeatably wealthy, celebrity and high status in society/politics and staying free from a single trace of problems one needs to have PhD level of education in Dharma. Then Dharma differs according to your natural instincts and spontaneous inclinations. With the rise of Buddhism with some editions a new definition arose and became popular.

With establishment of each tenet of Dharma new ESP is born in you. For example, if you follow sovereign honesty you develop a power to spot out gems and jewels hidden underneath the earth. With speaking appropriately you get power to curse or give benediction. With correct worship you get power to see celestial yogis and transcendental Beings and God. These are common Dharma universally applicable to all throughout the world.

Now there are advanced stages of Dharma.

Humanity is classified by nature into four professional categories according to their four different psychologies—

Intellect/philosophy oriented psychology:

Their Dharma consists of remaining organized and balanced minded always. Staying organized senses, enjoying difficulties that fall on the path of one’s duties and responsibilities. Staying neat and clean, immaculately physically, verbally and mentally. Doing yajna, offering donation, receiving donation, extensively studying the Galactic Chronicles; simple, cheerful, godliness etc., are the manners of life for someone who is born with intellectual and philosophical instincts. If they follow their Dharma they will grow and attain peace and everlasting happiness. Since modern intellectuals neither follow nor know their dharma that is why they are tense and complex these days. Their lifelong labor proves to be vain efforts like Sisyphus of the Greek Mythology.

Power oriented psychology:

Development of valor, illustriousness, smart, patience, undaunted, commanding personality and habit to offer donation to wisemen are Dharma of all those who have power oriented psychology.

Money oriented psychology:

Ceaseless striving to raise millions to billions, honesty, empathy, patience, being man of word, and donation giving nature and respect to other human beings as well as the environment.

Labor oriented psychology:

Servicefulness, selflessness, mastering techniques to relax body and mind at will, ability to uplift in Yoga of Action while intensively busy in work.

Similarly from 12 to 24 years of age storing energy and understanding is Dharma, from 25 to 49 honorable married life raising children towards integration and financial help to all, are Dharma. From 50 to 74 sharing one’s knowledge and after 75 exclusively dedicated life to attain the Absolute Truth. These Dharmas run concurrently. For details please see volumes of Galactic Chronicles.

These are the original elements of Dharma unconditioned by time, race, religion and nationality. These are virtues, instinctual, common law of evolution of consciousness.

Gita says—

“svalpa mapyasy dharmasy

trayate mahato bhayat”

Even a slightest of one’s Dharma followed reverently delivers from gigantic dread of fearful trouble.

There are three aspects of Dharma: Common (elementary), Advanced and Timely.

Acharah prathamo dharmah

Manu says—Regulative principles or honorable code of conduct or manner of humanness is the initial stage of Dharma.

When you follow Bhakti Yoga (Yoga of Love) nine dimensional devotional services are your Dharma. Then there are two stages: apara (elementary) and para (advanced). For details see ILCC Catalog 2000.

If you choose Gyana Yoga (Yoga of Intellect) your Dharma becomes four and six Treasures of Vedanta.

If you are in Royal Yoga eight limbs of Yoga become your common Dharma. For details see ILCC Catalog 2000.

When these limbs of Yoga become sovereign (unconditioned by time, place and situation) you develop various ESPs. When they fail to allure you then you are qualified for superb state of Enlightenment.

The samskaras, customs and behavior therapy which keeps changing according to time, place and situation are called Timely Dharma. Whenever it degenerates God sends wisemen to regenerate spirituality and fix the Dharma to fit in modern context. But this is always to protect the original fundamental Dharma. It never stands in contrast with the root. Whenever it does it perishes.

SELF DHARMA

“In order to protect the family from perishing you can give up one member of your home who is going astray from Dharma. In order to protect the villages sacrifice one home, and sacrifice the village gone astray from Dharma to save the nation. But to protect your self from the doom of ignorance you are supposed to renounce the whole world. But it requires guidance of an omniscient Being. Therefore Krishna was able to say in Gita—

“O Arjuna, forsaking all religions come in my refuge. I will deliver you from all evils. You will be enlightened. Do not worry.” Where God Realization is one hundred percent definite you can renounce all and everything and take a bold stand upon Him.

RACE (KULA) DHARMA

In whatever race you are born is your kula. In kula not only a living member of your family but also departed ancestors are included. So Race Dharma means taking care of all the ideals and principles for which your ancestors lived, suffered and died for. Not to do any such nonsense which would bring a blot to the fame of your race.

Prince Sri Rama said, “In our race our forefathers have given up life but never their given word.” So keeping one’s given word was the great thing of Iksvaku dynasty.

There are nine symptoms of Race Dharma: honorable codes of conduct, amiability, education, holy pilgrimage, dignity, ancestral occupations, giving donation with honor, and enjoying difficulties for cause of duty. A race where all these nine qualities meet is considered the best and supreme. In the history of Hindu India the nobility of a race was evaluated by these standards. Even in Europe, in Britain, race was considered in the appointment of responsible posts such as minister, statesman and politician. Now the condition is completely adverse. So Yogi Bhartrihari cuts a joke— “yasyasti vittah sa narah kulinah” One who is rich and crook is of noble race.

In the Middle Ages, European aristocrates had fallen very low, therefore they were hated terribly by people. So it was in India. It was Yuga Dharma’s interference, as well as negligence of assigned duties as announced by Manu— “Those who are born in the holy land of Bharata must travel all nations and let their citizens learn the lessons of integrated life.”

 

YUGA (AGE) DHARMA

In Galactic Chronicles the age of our creation is one kalpa. It consists of four billion solar years. It is divided in fourteen Manvantaras. Each Manvantara is divided in seventy-one Maha-yugas. Each Maha-yuga has four yugas—

1st, Golden Yuga consists of 1,728,000 years,

2nd, Silver Yuga is 1,296,000 years,

3rd, Copper Yuga 864,000 years, and,

4th, Iron Yuga 432,000 years.

Since last five thousand years Iron Age has started turning all values of life complex and watered-down whereas the former Ages were very rich in power, intelligence, nobility and wealth. The shortest span is an Age. It consists of twelve years. Even the destiny of a garbage hill changes into beautiful gardens or palacial buildings.

In Golden Age incarnations of Divine Mother, Lord Shiva and Lord Visnu established the foundations of Dharma firmly. In Silver Age Lord Rama, in Copper Age Lord Krishna and in Iron Age we see that civilizations collapse or commit suicide of their own. The nest built on weak twigs drops down soon. Our civilization is affected predominatly by the West. The West has founded its basis on weak and idiotic ideas such as Theory of Evolution and Big Bang Theory and so on. So it can destroy itself through a Third World War or any other foolishness. There is no place for a Divine incarnation at all.

The most delicate topic, highly philosophical points and mystical facts such as Nature, soul, God, Self, consciousness and standards of nobleness, as well as laws of success where material and spiritual success run together are found only in Bharata (reduced form now known as India). In Christianity and Muslims they call others as infidel, kafir-like dehumanizing names. They don’t have descriptions of elegance and big heartedness as we find in Galactic Chronicles. They do have Ten Commandments and related laws but most emphasis is stressed upon belief in their dogma.

Modern thought is the product of revolution against the oppressions of these two sects.

Freedom of thought has always been a part of Bharata’s culture. That is why it gave shelter to Christianity since last two thousand years (St. Thomas of Gowa) and Islam since one thousand years. But now they are crashing against the unity of the nation and many political problems have arisen.

There are many representatives of Dharma such as religion, sect, mission, society and so on. But as soon as they disregard the above-mentioned foundations of Dharma it becomes common Dharma to protest against them.

Besides these there is Aapaddharma or Emergency Dharma only for the times of trouble. This consists of concentrating the basics of Dharma, but it must not be misused as eceses for corruption and meanness or miserliness. After all, which one is the lesser of two evils can be decided only when your intuition is sprouted.

 

WHAT ABOUT YOU?

If you think it is impossible for human being to attain perfection of Dharma in his life then just keep these virtues as ideals of life to mold your acts and relations in this style and offer due veneration to a person in whom these virtue flowers are blossomed more fully than you conceive in terms of yourself. At least this would be an honest effort. Thought patterns, habits of every individual are changing according to time, place and situation so will be yours.

Modern people study neither Dharma Formulas nor Social Interaction Formulas. So even being PhD degree holder, a powerful politician or official, he/she remains illiterate in the basic tenets of life due to which his mind is peaceless and discontented. Therefore these are simple touchstones laid by the enlightened sages—

The essence of Dharma is—

“atmanah pratikulani paresam na sama charet”

Whatever behavior of others is uncomfortable to you don’t act with others that way.

Or

“parapakaray punyay papay parapidanam”

Causeless and unconditional helping attitude is the nobleness and hurtfulness is the evil.

If you are confused even in the matters of helpfulness and hurtfulness then—

“mahajano yen gatah sa panthah”

Follow the footsteps of wisemen.

If you are negligent to Dharma, Dharma is going to kill you. Because Dharma consists of basic laws of creation called Cosmic Law upon which Natural Laws function in turn upon which man-made National, Constitutional Laws are formed. So those who protect Dharma, Dharma protects him or her. Manu says—

“dharma eva hato hanti,

dharma rahsati raksitah”

Now it might be clear to you how Dharma and happiness both are interrelated.

HAPPINESS

Let us consider some more on happiness. Modern psychology and Western philosophy hold an idea that happiness is an illusion, a myth. There is only an existence of suffering. If you seek water in a mirage then definitely it is illusion but water does exist not in the desert but in the sea in the ocean .Not only water exists but it has multiple varieties .washing water, drinking water,sweet water, mineral water,delicious water -so many kinds, the water exists in river , lake, fountain. Not finding in the desert you can not start cotching to all people only with power of your money that water does not exist in the world, as Darvinism, Big bang theory followers, scientists and psychologists have started preachingout thru their success. Similarly lack of real happiness in your life only denotes you are missing Dharma. Happiness resides with Dharma-consciousness.

A thirsty person gets water, hungry one get food, senses get their objects, desire gets fulfilled and you feel happiness.

When your pain is reduced, disease is lessened, your life sentence is shortened, you feel happiness. Many people feel pain as if chest is splitting apart when money is spent from their pocket. There are people who enjoy feasting others and offering donations. Sometimes exactly the same thing which is the cause of somebody’s suffering may be the cause of your happiness. Just like death of a tyrant, arrest of a terrorist, traitor or decoit, transfer of a lazy smoking co-worker in your office.

Swamis and yogis enjoy renunciation but you may feel your future is perished.Ihad a friend in student life. He was always dressed in nice suit and tie and keep looking himself l into mirror for hours. One day I teased him. Hey, what if government puts a ban on your dressing and forced to wear like Mahatma Gandhi. He said then I will better like to commit suicide. So with which all wise men live for hundreds of years with all respect, there are people who would better die but not live like that. Someone enjoys cheating, teasing, taunting and deceiving others, you might enjoy serving others. Someone feels jealous on your progress but you are deliriously happy.

This means happiness on habitual pattern, natural instinct, past life records, present physical condition as well as your mood. You experience happiness according to your satisfaction capacity. For example, two jars one small, one large, are filled with water. Both appear to be full, but one has more water than the other. Same way you are happy into an extent you are sensitive, sincere and desiring for the object. Someone may be like a jar broken at the bottom that would never fill up. Means not be happy at all even when everything is around to be cheerful and ecstatic about.

Suffering or happiness is not the quality of an object, person, place and situation. They are only means to feel happiness or suffering. Pleasing perception is happiness and unwanted perception is suffering. Staying independent is happiness. Slavery is misery but who enslaves enjoys.

THREE KINDS OF HAPPINESS

Whatever comes unasked may be due to fate or past karma are called adhi devik.

Heat, cold, earthquake, flood accidents which come by physical contact is adhi bhotik.

Happiness and suffering which occur without outer contact is adhyatmik.

And, happiness and suffering both are relative. Both are constantly changing into one another.

No matter how diverse and divided they are each individual has natural inclination to liberate oneself from suffering. And every happiness is turning into misery and misery into happiness. So as human psychology gets mature and feels fed up with this mess then he strives to attain ultimate liberation called enlightenment. There is true happiness and it is eternal and inconceivable.

Unless you attain this state your happiness will be according to food you eat, people you make relationships with and your financial status. Like upper and lower parts of a wheel of a car they go on in life ever and ever. Obsessed and possessed mankind goes on wandering in the dense jungle of worldly relationships and body identification. To get liberated from this merry-go-round is the prime duty, main purpose of life. Into an extent you have invested your energy and intelligence to discover true happiness, and as much you have attained that very quality of consciousness, you will be provided in the next life and your search to fulfill the rest will become part of your life.

DHARMA & HAPPINESS

There are thousands of kinds of happiness. Such as having good health, beautiful appearance, smartness, birth in a rich and high family, passing exams every year, having a big business, celebrity status, spotless record, marrying with the most loved lover, able to meditate easily, finding an enlightened Guru, opening all chakras, international fame and so on. If happiness is a tree these are different branches and Dharma is the very root. All kinds of happiness have their one root. By following Dharma anyone can attain desired happiness. It is another subject which aspect of Dharma can offer which kind of happiness.

Question arises, what about wealth and pleasure derived from unrighteous means? What about many corrupt and nauseatic people enjoying costliest gifts of the world? Entire West has money oriented psychology. They have no concept of Dharma. The Middle Eastern countries too are not virtuous. China and Japan are enjoying great power and prosperity. How to accept Dharma is origin of happiness.

The answer is in Bhagavad Gita. There are three kinds of happiness. The happiness derived by non-virtuous means may give you joy or prosperity but no peace within. It will never soothe your Being, never satisfy your heart. You will keep chasing peace but peace would be as if never to be found. Then you will hate your way, become communist. Soon you will repent for this blunder then become capitalist. No matter what you become you will always be a mess. Always in trouble. You MIGHT BECOME A TROUBLE MAKER YOURSELF. Until and unless you hold dharma fast and bold there is no end to the miseries of mankind.

Only fortunate and wise ones strive to attain true happiness with inner peace that would be everlasting. Those who accumulate means of happiness through transgressing the path of Dharma by non-virtuous ways perish away sooner or later. Destruction and suffering are eminent.
