Jnana-Karma-Sanyasa Yoga

Fire of Understanding

Sri Krishna spoke,

“1.92 Billion years ago at the dawn of history, in the early morning, upon this very same planet earth, O Arjuna, I told this knowledge, this yoga, to Visvasvan, the Sun god.

“He then educated his son Manu, organizer of our present Age & builder of a magnificent, colossal empire, depicting the very cream of intergalactic Space,

“Manu then transferred this yogic knowledge to his handsome son Ikswaku when he was in his teenage. Later he successfully succeeded his father, not only in empire, but also in wisdom and all great virtues of power born of this wisdom.

“Thus, O Arjuna, handed down generation after generation, from time immemorial, this age-old wisdom became known to all sagacious dynasties of the solar royalties. Founded on the backbone of this knowledge that civilization became known as the Golden Age, satya-yuga, for about 4 million years. Due to a long lapse of time after that it was lost; it is only now that its regeneration is taking place between you and I. A great redemption is at hand. You, O my dear friend, are the first exponent of this wisdom since then. Now for thousands of years in the future your fame will be immortal.”

Arjuna said,

“My friend, O Krishna, how come? You were born when I was born, you are my age, it’s too recent. And Vivasvan, that grand, towering One, whom I read and heard about since very young, he’s an Alpha of the history, a legendary hero. How shall I know you said this to him?”

Krishna responded, “You & Me, O my friend, have been born in the past many many times. You do not know them but I do. My advent, life span, and disappearance is like a flash of lightening. Usual birth & actions are arranged by Yogamaya, my pleasure potency. When and when moonshine of dharma is trapped by the world wide unrighteous, then and then I on earth sparkle & splash like lightening, and Yogamaya then manages a special form & nature, and plans to carry out certain definites; thus my frolics flow. For dissolution of the wicked& rejuvenation of the sagacious, for fixing up dharma I manifest age after age, never I miss. Whatever, however is my schedule & program, howsoever is my birth and pastimes-usual or unusual, peculiar or mysterious, they are divine- so much so that if their meanings are revealed in your heart, you become so pure thatyour transmigrational process stops. You become blissed outin immortal recognition. There arc innumerable vitaragas who have thus attained Me throughout history. Why just by knowing? Because knowing Me and becoming Me are identical and simultaneous! Because, o dear friend,

“As soon as you think of Me I think of you. By thinking& counter thinking we penetrate into each other You become Me and1 become you; that’s why sages are the very heart of mine and I’m the very heart of sages. I know sages and sages know only Me. Outside each other we both don’t know anyone else.

ye yathamam prapadyante tamstathaiva bhaja myaham

naham tebhyo managapi

“That’s why those who are searching for Me are searching for themself. Once they attain, whatever name, that’s your business, but 1 know that I’m attained by you. And you are just mine own…

“Worship, prayer, meditation, kirtan - are just varieties of ways of thinking of Me. By addressing it to others other than Me, only means your fruit orientation hasn’t yet ended. But that’s okay. You’ll get what you wanted but not Me. For Me, for your very you, just think of Me, just think of Me. Your remembrance I shall wear on my heart like a diamond necklace. The echoing of your singing in memories of Me I shall wear as my ear rings. It is only to wear these sacred ornaments, and to be sure which ornament is coming, that I divided the mankind by natural courses of their actiton as well as samskaric instincts into wisemcn, warriors, businessmen and workmen.

“Although this classification is based on degrees of the hold-on expectation of the fruit of action they constantly do, transcendence of fruit-expectation on the line of duty kicks out the entire system of classification. Tightening of expectations, hopes, passionate clinging, and unrestrictable urges, pile up a destiny of ropes and ropes of bondage through this classification system. Although I myself have classified people, still I am absolutely snow white clean and distant away from the thick, black ugly darkness of fruit-oriented psychology. Look at my so neat & clean white suit! Anyone who looks at my suit instantaneously takes a quantum leap out of bondage, or all ropes & ties of bondage are broken and torn out, and there he goes free.

“Freedom-seeking beings of all generations have engaged in the line of their duty remembering and keeping the above set neatly in their perspective. Therefore, you too like them should perform your action. The same course is awaiting you.

“What is action what is non-action what is inaction and how action binds even great intellectuals go deluded in deciding. So I want you to get it right!

“Action performed without a single tinge of darkness of doership is action not done but happened. Happening action is always by the will of the Cosmic and that’s Me; and in turn your very you. So happening is always interconnected with the Cosmic, and doing with doership is always glued up with super-glue to heavy-duty bondage focused around ego-your falseyow.”

Even though apparently renouncing, even though his swami silk robe is sparkling & shining, and he heroically abandons all family calling it maya, and goes to the Himalayas, sits on a hill top and looks very gorgeous, still. Krishna informs Arjuna, because there are still thick piles of doership in all his great actions and even he is in the limelight leading thousands, still in his each movement there is plentiful painful bondage of karma. So his renouncing and going to the Himalayas and meditating there is not good enough to equal the shoe making job of Saint Raidasa Baba. Because on the line of his duty as a cobbler he transcended the notion of all doership. If you see the contrast and penetrate the reality and evolve such a constant perspective that you spot right away non-action in action and inaction in action, then you are an actor for the Universe; a living instrument of the Cosmic; and a living symbol of the Divine. This spot-light perspective can be attained by,-

burning ablaze all your doership involvement in the sacred fire of wisdom. Then here you go, you become the holy sire.

“Arjuna, Kicking out fruit-oriented instincts, abandoning fruit-expecting attitudes, cleaning one’s hands off of the black, sticky dirt of doership notions, when you stay devoid of all your shelterings of sense objects and begin developing by & by experiencing the bliss & love within, in your true Self, or visualizing the Divine abode of mine within the effulgence of your inner Self, and when this enjoyment becomes still & stable & permanent, then whatever course of action you take, no matter on the line of duty or other’s duty, right or not right, however you are, such doing is not doing anything. It is just happening. The will of the Cosmic is materializing for fulfillment of some special purpose for the welfare of multitudes for the Universe, through the Universe, and in the Universe.

“Therefore begin with,–

“Stay arisen from the boundary of pairs of opposites; stay far away from the stinking filth of jealousy and grounded solid in equanimity of success & failure, hire and fire, flood & sunshine, earthquake & normal day. North Pole & Bahamas, should all be the same…

“Whenever you reach this point of evolution of consciousness then doing all like Parasuram still you are doing nothing; and not doing anything at all like Dattatreya, you are doing a billion dollar job. Tough lawyer charges$500 an hour, yours will be $1500 for 15 minutes. That valuable your time and mind and your word become. Then how highly valuable is the association of such a mighty magnanimous being? Can you speculate & calculate? Being with him is satsanga. And how so generous… Have you seen any so oceanic hearted,- he never charges you a single penny! Rather he feeds you, gives you a place to live, talks to you with big smilings on his face. When you learn to develop stamina to sacrifice your accomplishments upon each innocent smile of his counlenance then you are destined to attain something worth having. Being karma-free is the only cost.

“Getting rid of passionate clinging, urges of lusting, except for working hard on the line of your duty, trying hard to live by wisdom and fixing yourself always for sharing, for participating in yajna all your karmas get gone lost in the bottomless abyss.

“Bring one kg of clarified melted butter in a silver bowl, put 2 kg rice, herbs, dry fruits, leaf powder on a silver plate, many kinds of fragrant flowers on another, water in a silver glass, a snow white conch, and kindle the consecrated fire with chants of the Vcdas and slow rhythmic conch sound toots. Then begin offering oblations chanting your mantra mentally and offer in the fire with some loud svaha. While doing this process ignite your intuitive process and will strongly with devotion, faith and homage that your individual consciousness is offered as an oblation into the flames of cosmic consciousness. When you started you felt that the whole world, including your body & mind, were textured with delusive reality of dream and by the completion of all you find and see all things including your mind & body as mere compositions of Bramhic blissful reality. Vedic chants with sama music going on in the background, fragrant fire blazing, sitting around the alter all your loved ones, friends, relatives, husband, wife, sons, brothers pouring loving oblations you unite in one bramhic tie of reality. Your relationships become deeper and lasting. By the end you find the consecrated fire is Bramha, oblations too are Bramha, wife too is Bramha, husband too, me too…I am Bramha and I am entering the deepest core of heart in deep meditation that which you touched, the Mystic transcensia that too is truly Bramha.”

Krishna has been invited again and again in huge, million dollar international scale Rajasuya & Asvamedha yajna ceremonies. He has seen and lived and relived all that. So whenever he finds an opportunity he takes off and mentions yajna… We can concisely recite them,

“Some offer oblations of the purified focus in the seven consecrated fires of the chakras, from Muladhar to Sahastrar. Oblations of inhalation and exhalation into the fire of kumbhak.

“Others offer oblations of music, embrace, beauty, deliciousness, perfume, into the fire of the senses with no desire at all for sensation.

“Still others offer oblations of reading words of wisdom into the fire of the brain.

“Others offer oblations of one’s life in the line of duty into the fire of sacrificial history or cosmic life.

“Yajnas are finer & superior according to the degree of wisdom inherent. They culminate and complete into wisdom. Wisdom means expansion from petty mindedness to broad heartedness to magnanimity to cosmic-consciousness. Here is the last fire…

“To this laudable goal there are many subgoals to be discovered based on your individual history of samskaras over the last billion years. It is not an easy job, therefore, go and travel & explore holy places bathe in holy Ganga, visit sacred temples, humbly walk in Himalayas and find the real sage, some Tattvadarsi… Offer innocent, hearty obeisances, offer your humble services and he will bless you with understanding of the mystery. Knowing which you will be free…

yena bhutanyasesena draksyasyatmanyatho mayi

“Then you will see that your consciousness is such a vast expansion of oceanic, nectarine illumination in which all beings abide in their bramhic reality. Then you will see their allness submerging and unifying in Me, the satchidanandam…

“If you miss to fill any quota of homage that empty space will attract nothing but suspicion and negative argument. Then more non-understanding or misunderstanding will creep in and to the suspicious a definite downfall is certainly destined. In order to dispel such inauspicious possibilities, O Arjuna, through yoga of love divinize your actions by dedicating them to Me, and cast all suspicion to the winds of folly where they belong, forever gone, thru yoga of understanding. Being thus Self-established karmas will not bind you.

“Pierce your suspicions then through the sword of yogic understanding and be firmly established and steady in yogic equanimity; thus stand boldly, undaunted, and ready for battle.”

Karma-Yoga Excellency and

Elegance of Action

Arjuna asked,

“Dear Sir, First you praised intensity in action on the line of duty, and then you elaborated the glory of Bramhic experience. If the latter is supreme why am I to involve in this dangerous action?”

Krishna said,

“World’s psychology in all ages is either introvert or extrovert, philosophers or workaholics, and of course combinations of both. Therefore the original approach to Absolute Truth or Supreme one God is always two– jnana yoga, yoga of understanding, for the introverts, and karma yoga, yoga of action, for the extroverts.

“All religions of the world of past, present & future are composed of different ingredients of both. Whatever psychology is predominant in the world’s population, that quality of religion has the largest appeal. But religion would be always a sect, a separatist, fundamentalist, unless it embraces both approaches, and bestows the techniques and guidance according to their different distinct set-ups of levels of consciousness.

“But dear friend, in neither of these two approaches, nor in their compounds and off-shoots, is action to be abandoned. Action has to be transcended, abandonment is detrimental to the transcendence. Because, action’s transcendence is possible only by upgraded series of more responsible, sensitive, serious and risky actions. That is how you evolve. Dropping out is far too lethargic. And adopting outside actions will create extra bondage. And after all, there is no way anyone can exist without action. Even if you are doing nothing, you may be sitting, looking, talking, breathing, thinking– all these are indeed actions. If they are not organized & directed to one’s immediate duty & responsibility, then they go vagrant. Piles of binding influences of useless actions keep your brain dusty and slippery and too thick that words of wisdom do not reach to it. Not only intellectually you go handicapped, but also true love is never born in your heart. You fail to experience the thrill of true love; your heart remains paralyzed love-wise. Only skin-deep superficial emotions you can handle and different whimsical moods dominate your love life.

“If you do not perform action but keep on thinking about things that money can buy then you go on becoming a hypocrite.

“Therefore, O Arjuna, learn to act selflessly Dear, be not svarthy by working just for your belly and little family. Be nisvarthy, the selfless performer of your duty.

“In the beginning of Cosmic day, about1.92 billion years ago, the first being discovered the process of yajna, showing gratefulness and generosity to properly designated beings. These beings are everywhere, all over, and when you begin to share your hard labored earnings with them, then they speed up your progress. So feed them and in turn they will offer through the course of nature all that’s needed for your life and sustenance. But remember they have given you gifls, satisfy them first before use. If you don’t you commit theft and too many of such cases compound the destiny of great robbery and series of burglaries. Robbers can then survive on your theft tendencies. Then even if you buy all weapons of USA & USSR and use them to guard your wealth, some masterminded robber will arise & successfully rob you up or disease will sneak in and rob you of years of your life. Tornado will rob of all your belongings. So don’t be a thief first thing.

“Next, the food you cook through the money of your own selfless labor, share that with celestials and others, then eat with your family. This food is brain cleansing, heart purifying; it is a tonic for your spiritual stamina; best for your psychological health & upliftmcnl of consciousness.

“Those self-centered, selfish, non-sharing people who cook and eat just to feed their own bellies and own little family, eat only dirts which smear-up the intellect making it more workaholic and dull, making simple spiritual progress a million year task…

“All beings are sustained through food. Food is born from rain. Rain comes from yajna. That comes from proper set-up of human duty. This self-course of action comes from the Vedas. The Vedas come from the Supreme Lord, and God is always present when acts of sharing begin. He is the omnipresent. But His manifestation, His presence, His movement is seen and felt in the melting state of heart, of a selfless nisvarthy person.

“Those who do not live by I his process of mutual sharing, called yajna, and live by they’re own concocted self-styled life, live in vain and are only burdens on this earth. Then divine incarnations intervene to eliminate.

“But then again, don’t rush, don’t yoke, don’t force physically or verbally your kind of work on all. Because, right in the heart of the world there are those who have no duties at all. They have transcended through the due process clause. Physical body is too uninformative. The record of all spiritual practices is inside in the chitta in subconscious layer of mind. Now they have arisen and live contented in their Inner Self through Inner Self for the Inner Self. His or her body & senses, mind, intellect & ego are as distinct & separate to him as that tree to you; that hill, this table and this chair to you. These all have become exterior agents, adjuncts, and outer shells in comparison to the Inner Self wherein he resides all the time. He has no selfish ties with anyone. What all he does are actions for the welfare of the world. Therefore never go to bother someone who is like that; like Jadabharata,- King Rahugan yoked him to work– and see what happened? Don’t underestimate wise guys like King Janaka. Don’t punish great beings like Socrates or Lao Tze. Such highly evolved great men may be found working hard on the line of their duty, like Guru Nanak farming, Kabir weaving clothes, Paramesthi tailoring, Manidas gardening, Lahiri Mahasay working in the post office, but they are not duty-bound ones! They arc doing it for the education of the world and training of those who recognize them and create perfect ideals or models for evolving progressive life.

“Me too, O Arjuna, am like this! Sitting on the highest pedestal of evolution of consciousness, I’ve no action, no duty, and no responsibility because I’ve neither samskaras nor vasanas. I’m free! Even if I kill the whole world and create exactly the same all over again, or different from this, I’ve that much power to remain unstained. And I never ever lose it. Wherever I go, whatever form I assume, it is always with Me… Growth of body and age has nothing to do with my power’s growth. Birth & death are my play. Time & space are my toys; elements and gunas too are my instruments to universalize myself.

“But see, I myself too engage in action as anybody else. But it is only to provide an idea and model for progressive life. And one thing more, to offer objects of meditation to all mankind. And it is my humble advice to all those who become enlightened, although free, please, still perform action for lokasiksa, for education of the world. Otherwise, people are going to follow you; because as much as you become spiritually evolved you become more illustrious, charismatic, magnetic, and all arc more likely lo imitate your gestures and performances more than your message. Therefore, let your life be your message. No confusion, no misunderstanding, no conflict should be spread through you in those following the teachings of the scriptures.

“But no matter what and no matter how careful confusion & misunderstanding are going to overtake you O Arjuna, for the simple reason of being hypnotized by ego which remains as long as you impose your doership; and from that none can save you, no one can help you.

“There is one way. Just like that girl, when and when her hair covers her forehead, then, again and again she shakes her head and lo the hair flies back; the same way, do like this…

tatva vitlu mahabaho

guna karma vibhaga yon

gunagunesu vartanta

iti matva na sajjate

“Through Prcm meditation dive deep in & through Mystica transcensia experience to your true Self. Then come out retaining the impacts, and thus perform actions.

“When and when object identification overshadows your experience, shrug and shake it off saying it is only

Krishna answered, “This desire, this passion, this irritation turning into fire of sex & rage, ever unsatiable. Know for sure this presses always.

“Just like a mirror is covered by dust, fire is covered by smoke, fetus is covered by water, so also your illustrious wisdom is covered by piled up dusts of desires by kama- the lust; It never gets its fill even in millions of years of constant fulfilling. So much time and innumerable efforts of so many life times have gone in vain due to this shyster.

“Senses, mind & intellect are where kama stays, and assuming innumerable forms sneakingly operates. He works this threesome in so many ways until he obtains whatever he wants, keeping the Atma on hold all the while, superimposed, in a near faint. Therefore, organize the senses and conquer O fearless one, this desiring vasana fast.

“When you conquer it its outer body falls off and there arises intuition. This operates throughout the expiry of your spiritual practice until the time when you attain enlightenment when its outer body falls off again, then there arises pratibha. During materialistic life that which acts as kama or vasana, in yogic life functions as intuition; in post enlightenment it functions as pratibha, a wisdom-like spol light of illumination. Therefore- this kama, which is trying to drag you in allurement of another’s duty, leaping off the track of your own dharma, just to satisfy your mind, intellect and loony senses, averse to killing these your kinsmen, O Arjuna, conquer it!

Sankhya-Yoga On the Line of Duty

Sri Krishna’s nectarine words echoed…..

Sri слова гладкого персика Кришны отозвался эхом…..

“Stand up like a man, Arjuna this inner weakness isn’t worthy of the glory of your dynasty! Fling away this unmanlincss! It’s most inappropriate.”

Krishna spoke & paused. Startled, Arjuna looked & looked at the determined face of Krishna still hearing the echoing of what he had said.

“My Lord, I know not what is right and what is wrong. Please, please, O great one, O magnanimous hearted friend. What’s right for me, right now in this situation, please told me that Oh unconfused one. Lo, –here I become your disciple teach me, educate me, train me into the way of honor and delight.” Arjuna said.

Here then, like splashings of enlightening Krishna began to smile, his glances becoming ambrosial, and his sweet, soothing words of wisdom echoed…

“On the line of duty and responsibility, O Arjuna, whatever comes according to place, time and circumstance, do your duty to the best of your ability dear with only one talent, with only one exquisite faculty that is- with utmost freedom from egoism, which is~ m the doer.’ The notion that ‘I am doing it.’

“Whenever, somehow, anyhow, however, you bring a discussion of right & wrong, doable or renounceablc, lovable or detestable, then know for sure the basis of this is ignorance.

“And ignorance is only one, that is being devoid of the knowledge & experience that you are not the doer. Yes, you are not the doer but a witness of the happening.

“With complete freedom from doership, when you perform action according to your finest skillness, being educated into the intricacies of your duty, then whatever happens thru you, you incur no karma. Vice versa, you become established in such a Divine Self within whom you do not suffer any loss, disease & death. Because all gain, all accomplishments and all pleasures become like a shallow, muddy pond, whereas you found a sparkling pool of elixir. With this nectarine life of your pure Immortal Self-childhood, teenage, adulthood, old age & death are like light changes in formations of life. They are but natural. Death of your’s or others involved on the line of duty for justice, for the protection of the righteous, for safety of humanity, is a natural flow of evolving consciousness. Therefore, whatever pain or agony comes, bear it. Take it easy. Because to whom this pain cannot move, to whom this joy of senses cannot shake, O Arjuna- amritatvaya kapate such a one attains ambrosial life in eternal abode of mine.

“This eternal abode is situated in the tiny space of chidakasa in vast expansion of your True Self. This True Self is indestructible weapons can’t cut it, fire can’t burn it, water can’t drown it, air can’t hurl it down. It is omnipresent, immovable, still and eternal; formless to physical existence, inconceivable to senses, beyond mind & ego. Never changing as it is you ought not to lament at all O Arjuna.

“If you think it of birthing and dying nature, then too each one born will die some day. All days are interconnected from birth to death. This time factor is part of maya, body too, ego too. Before you were bodiless, after death you become bodiless again. Just in the middle it appears. It may be just appearance, like cloud, iceberg or rainbow–who knows. Just find out. Maybe the existence is only of the Self, and everything else may be just a projection over it, like moving pictures on a t.v. screen.

“To this fact of Inner Self someone looks filled with wonder & delight like Socrates others listen about it filled with thrills like Chaitanya, others discourse about it overwhelmed with amaze like me, and many others experience it in floods of oceanic peace, serenity & placidity like Buddha. Still there are others who even listening, seeing & speaking, do not know-just like the whole world, generation after generation.

“Arjuna, dear friend, this Self in all these warriors is unkillable at any cost. Finding your job risky and dangerous be not afraid O disciple mine. Do or die condition on the line of duty is a rare opportunity. Very fortunate one finds it, open door to heaven as it is, I tell you. Backing out is a sin. a big karma, a blot to the moonshine of fame of your historic dynasty, and doing which long-time smoking people will talk of your nonsense in casinos, bars & restaurants. That’s worse than death.

“Arise, get up, stand up O scorcher of your enemies, win & enjoy life’s success, die & enjoy heaven. On the line of duty both are two beautiful roses. Can’t you smell it? Even if you need none of these, still do this fighting please–for me, for you, for the whole universe, being equal in happiness and suffering, achievement & loss, victory & defeat. This way you will earn the greatest possible wealth, inner treasury of contentment, inner satisfaction & deep meditation.

“Please do not go deluded in flowery words of so many religions. That is just jugglery to entertain the restless mind. Those who have no-yavasayatmika buddhi-the intellect capable of proper decision, always do that. The proper decision is nistmigunyo bhava. Transcend, O Arjuna, the field of all 3 gunas, modes of nature: mode of dullness, of restlessness, & peacefulness. Go beyond them. Rise above the pairs of opposites, pain & pleasure, loss & gain, heat & cold, respect & insult, craving & satisfaction, worry of getting the ungotten& safety of the gotten, and be Self established. After being such an atmavan you go beyond all, and then you don’t have to follow-what to speak of man-made laws, and the laws of nature, but also orders of scriptures. You are then your own law. For that to begin with, O dear friend, you have to feel your right is on the performance of your duty alone and not outside that, not even to its fruits, no matter how great the alluration is. And also- do not be attached to this pattern, or else you may develop dryness of heart or cold bloodedness. Also do not slip into loss of interest in actions related to love, fun and music. Understand your duty in its colossal form and do it!

“Therefore, no need to go on long trek to the Himalayas. Himalayas are here, materialized for your salvation. Anything less than all of this will be a mere parroting of existence.

“Therefore O Dhananjay, dive deep within your Self. Penetrate, sink, enter, explore the bottom of your own Self, and then come out on physical level and perform action, treat ing success & failure alike but in the intensity. in the enthusiasm, in the energy level, in vigor, in vitality– go to the apex. Then this treating-alikehood is the splendor of yoga.

Yoga is union with the Divine be unified with Divine, established in immense enthusiasm & vigor and all the zest of aliveness; treating achievement & loss, making & breaking, respect & insult as little toys, or childish, immature feelings of moodiness, thus perform your action. And this is what yoga is my dear friend.

kannasit kouxalam

“It is the very dexterity of action, this skillncss, this aliveness, this refinement of your vision, your perspective through intensity of performance, which transforms itself into freedom of floating in the pool of nectar.

“When your intellect will cross the muddy, stinky ditch of moha, illusion, then it will be steady, and illumination will dazzle!”

“Then, O my lord, tell me, what is the symptom of one who has attained steady intellect? How does he walk, talk, eat, sit?” Arjuna inquired.

“It is desire shaped into longing, passion, hankering for sensations, that keeps the mind agitated and irritated; When you drop the desiring and enjoy in your Self, through your Self, then you become a man of steady intellect.

“When tensionless, stressless & strainless you remain even in big big pain and trouble, and are completely unexcited and vanilylcss in great good happiness; and angerlessly, fearlessly, are uninvolved as an actor on the stage of life; and like a tortoise you withdraw your senses when in the presence of alluring sense objects that would otherwise lead you astray from your Divinity; then know for sure that you are of steady, pure intellect.

“While trying to become like that, the boat of mind many times, may be taken away, tossed & turned round and around by turbulent waves of senses. Therefore be careful Arjuna. You ought to organi/e your senses dear and flow in deep love towards Me. Because I am not outside you; I’m not distinct from your original reality. I am your purified, actualized, very YOU. Address your emotions to Me, & senses will not agitate. Otherwise objects of senses will appear in the mind. If you remember them then you make a destiny to go into that. Then you continue to be involved into that. May be a beautiful person, music, food, smoke, home, car, dress or any situation. As soon as the barrier comes agitation comes, becoming anger which stupefies the intellect then ability to think back and forth gets gone and intellectual bankruptcy spreads…. There downfall arises in lifesize proportion and all higher possibilities are devoured.

“But opposite to this the properly organized thinking principled one, with Self-experience-born freedom from attachment and abhorrence, who is clean and clear from being smeared with misery and pathological psychology, is just one step away from solid steadiness.

“A divinely ununificd one has no intelligence. Because, intelligence is born from solid introspection. Without that feeling keeps on missing, then peace too gets lost; how then can happiness arise in such a life? And can a life without happiness be called a life?

“With whichever sense mind is most addicted, when it moves & travels & marries with it, hurrying to be unified with tasty sense objects, then, kidnapped away is the left-over intelligence, just like a storm tosses, turns and sinks a ship.

“Arjuna my dear, get awake into the immortal life of your inner Self. Get awake into the reality of ecstatic love oceanica. Get awake into the satchidanandam-all encompassing tatva. Be a yogi and make it your day. Jog, run, play, explore, travel, love and live. This is the day for yogies and worldly life is night for them; in that they sleep soundly. But the non-yogi awakes in worldly life, and spiritual life is night to them; they do fast sleeping snoring & snoring & snoring.

“Falling from high hills of Himalayas, waters of innumerable rivers rushing down flow fast, faster & fastest, meandering their way to submerge in the ocean without any agitation. The same way, if there is some mighty hearted, oceanic hearted, magnanimous gentleman, in whom all senses with all of their urges to unile with sense objects, submerge without a trace, he or she is said to be of steady intellect.

“Arjuna dear one, rising above all desires for sensations, one who performs action on the line of his duty remaining uninvolvcd, egoless, reproductively impressionless, that one attains peace. That one neither becomes allured nor goes confused. Always super-right actions happen through his limbs. Even if he wants to do wrong he cannot do. He is always accurate, honest and upright. He doesn’t need to choose because whatever flows makes the destiny finest and best. Why? Because of this simple reason, he has: bramha nin’dna mrchchati he has become arisen and firmly established on the top high minaret of bramha nirvana state of highest consciousness.

Arjuna-Visada-Yoga

…The Melanholia…

dhrtarastra uvaca

 samaveta yuyutsavah

mamakah pandavas caiva

kim akurvata sanjaya

dharmaksetre kuruksetre

Dhrtarastra asks,

O Sanjaya - assembled in the land of righteousness,

on the battlefield of Kuruksetra, prepared to fight.

What did my sons

and the Pandavas do?

The existence and evolution of the world is sustained by venerated firmness in one’s responsibilities. With all beings winning their distracting psychological hurdles a series of progress begins in life. Progressive life promotes, sustains, and furthers the existence of the world towards an evolutional peak And when such callosal firmness in one’s venerated responsibilities and duties is combined with additional new changes matching with progressed levels of consciousness, then that is known as dharma.

Dharma is power, almost electrical power, which moves us towards the highest hilltop of evolution of consciousness where aliveness, peace, wisdom and joy are greater & greatest. It is due to the accumulation of unintentional, unknown, dharma fruit perhaps hereditary, that our wealth, health and wellness is secured and sustained in the present. Tamasic performance of dharma results in prosperity with evil mindedness, rajasic performance results in success and prosperity with utterly commercialized state of mind and satvic performance results in prosperity and success with higher consciousness.

As soon as we run out of dharma, days of our doom strikes us hard. Life sinks into ruin. Families disperse, heart breaks, disease props out and mind goes on dungconizing on and on and on… It is human life alone where we are free from the built-in program, where we can study, learn, and act freely to become rich and famous in the science & art of dharma by maturing ourselves in the excellency of performance of our venerated duties and responsibilities. Therefore, here asks the blind mind, yes, blind, because he cannot act and decide on his own; he needs the senses to act and intelligence to decide. And every person on earth is governed by his mind; that’s why the first character of Gita is a king who is blind. His name is Dhrtarastra. He asks Sanjaya, the intelligence, who pays him occasional visits.

“In the world of action, in the field of human life, assembled to fight, what did the supporters of my selfishness and friends of my dutifulness do?”

The Kauravas represent negative, pathological, anti-dharma, mediocre desires; Pandavas represent positive, optimistic, high-aiming dharmic desires. Both desires have their roots in the heart. And they are hereditary, still they can be changed, and, that is for what life is…

And thus the saga begins, and Sanjaya answers,

“Bubbling with immense energy both armies have stood facing each other. Mighty white conches have been blown deafening the ears of warriors.

War music is echoing, weapons jingling, and in the midst of this all, Oh King, Arjuna is asking-

“My Lord, place my chariot from where I can see all who want to fight with us…”

Partha pasyaitan

samavetan kurtin

“Arjuna, look see the assembled armies of the Kauravas”

The sweet voice of Lord echoed.

“Oh Lord, Oh my… What I was going to do. Killing all these men… oh no no no… After all they are my own brothers -cousins, teachers and grandfather, maternal uncle, friends, acquaintances, and so many. So many relatives… Fighting with them, killing them, oh even a knuckle on their head is unbearable, how can I kill them. If I kill them how will I live with that guilt? Cannot enjoy the empire and life’s pleasures smeared with the blood of my own kinsmen… No way-”, he perspired, tears came to his eyes, brain reeled, heart sank, eyes darkened… Said he,

“…No Krishna, no– I better retreat and I am, lo- I am going to the Himalayas. 1 will sit on Mt. Everest - I will meditate.”

What Arjuna is telling is absolutely right. Killing is no good, never good. Going to the Himalayas is the best thing of life. Decision of meditation is the ultimate symptom of your maturity. That means you’ve taken the wisest step in life.

But suppose right in the front of a police man or five star general of an army, who is standing equipped with all weapons on the line of his duty and there, right in front of his eyes, his own children are being murdered, killed and mutilated, his own sister, wife, or mother dragged away by the enemy, his own house robbed and this guy suddenly says, “No, no killing is too bad, If I save then I have to kill these people and there will be ample bloodshed, Oh, I cannot see thai, I can’t do it. Let me close my eyes, let me go to the Himalayas. I should better go and meditate and when they are done only then I can open my eyes.”

Or suppose President Bush announces he wants to invade Cuba and all the solidarity party members close their mouths, pack away their picket signs, shut up their shops and presses and go to the Sierras or Alps instead. Then what?

If an army officer or solidarity member says like this then is he a human being at all? Has he any humanness in him? Is he right? No, he is absolutely wrong.

The Kauravas had done such vicious things. King Duryodhana had tried to kill his own innocent cousins the Pandavas. He successfully poisoned Bhima, successfully set fire-in their home at night, conspired against them and thereby robbed their stale, wealth and wife, dragging their queen by her hair, trying to unclothe her in the royal assembly. Another time they kidnapped her. They stole the cows of the Pandavas’ friend King Virat whose palace they were staying in. And now these same people are standing with upraised weapons to kill Arjuna and his brothers and all other righteous ones, and Arjuna is talking like this!

It happens many times that we fail to connect things in their proper order. Because there is always a gap between karma and its connected result. That is why confusion comes in between right and wrong. And it is here that we need a wise man, a spiritual guide, a master minded scripture knowing holy man.

Krishna is the wisest man on earlh he does the job, He teaches, he makes Arjuna understand enough to stand firm again on the line of duty. But he does so in a very murmuring, meandering, serpentine way. And this makes Gita picturesque. So here we go.

Arjuna is very despondent, very sad and morose. Whatever is the language, however the words, this is the essence of the first chapter of Gita. Grasp it.

DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to my Reverend Father who educated me in Gita wisdom ever since I was five years old. Who lived until this book was written, but departed to heaven before it appeared in book form.

It was on Sunday, 26th of January, at 11:00 a.m. when we received the sorrowful message. We entered into prayer, “O Lord of Gita, please bestow peace and joy upon his departed soul.”

With sacred memories of his compassion, concern and belongingness, I offer my heart-felt obeisances to that magnanimous one who always enjoyed speaking and listening the Gita and Ramayan, the two invaluable gems of wisdom of India, the wisest nation of the world.

Can You Believe It?

EDITORIAL

A visitor asked a holy man, “Sir, why is this handkerchief trembling?”

“Because you came to visit me my child, and I wanted to see you. I had a high fever so I put it in this cloth which happened to be nearby.”

Can you believe it, that this body, mind and all the ideas and understanding about yourself is like a piece of cloth which happened to be nearby, and you, for some unknown reason, have happened to put yourself into it and since then you are not what you are in fact? And since then all the miseries and problems have arisen. And you keep on searching for yourself, Who am I? Who am I? … Answers do come but soon to be proven too pseudo and thus one never finds it. Because your search begins with identification of yourself with the handkerchief and that keeps changing as soon as it is worn out. You even become identified with any new thing, which happens to be nearby. This is the condition of all people throughout the world.

In Gita Krishna explains himself many times in terms of the very Self of all the beings who are lost in an identity crisis. When he says, “Come to Me, Listen to Me, Worship Me, or Relinquish all and take shelter of Me,” he is not saying it out of ego or to control you or enslave you. He only means if you do it you will realize yourself, and doing so age-old problems and suffering will come to an end.

“What a great surprise” A seer says to Krishna, “You are our own Sell, but we take you as the other while actually the body, senses, and mind are others, totality alien, even inert, but we take them as ours, our own, our self, and then we begin to search for ourself somewhere else, all and everywhere… What a great wonder of ignorance?”

That is why a sage promised, “Lord, knowing you one becomes you.” This is him, the very atma of everybody. For the welfare of the world he appeared as another being in the body and began moving and speaking and acting as one of us.

In his cosmic form, space and time are just imposed. When he appears by his maya power, making us feel as if he is also like us and acts among us as one of us, his pastimes are then highly captivating, but all these are only to reach us, to touch our hearts, to convey the message. This is the language he uses just to communicate with us. When infinite is talked in terms of finite there will always be a problem. Therefore, when Krishna says, “I create, I am doing it, you be an instrument, I am the supreme power.” Then just don’t become negative, don’t get turned off. Don’t wonder if he is God, then where I shall be. If he sits on that chair, where will I sit? Don’t compete. You will lose a most wonderful opportunity. Be sympathetic, try to understand his pain. He is trying to tell in various ways, Aksar, nistraigunya, Bramha, purusa, God, Atma, I, mam, etc., that these just terminologies for you, what you actually are, your own future possibility, your ultimate potentiality. So be cooperative and positive, think what he is going through for you. And I am sure you will get the point.

Then whenever you will meet Krishna you will find none else but an advanced state of your ownself. If you are a scientist you’ll find him as a greater scientist. A poet, he is a greater poet; a wrestler, he is the greatest wrestler; a politician, he will he the greater one; if you are a beauty lover, he will be the greatest of all beautifuls; a musician, he is the best musician; mystic, he will be the greatest mystic; if rich, he will be more rich than everybody you have ever heard of; if you are a terminator, he will come to you as a bigger terminator; if you are a logician, he will appear as the world’s best logician. In short Krishna is another name for your own higher possibility. Krishna of Gita transcends individuality. He is Tao, Nirvana, Kaivalya, Self, and so many, and at the same time, none of them. He is just what there is. And to know what there is to this ultimate ISNESS, is the message of Gita of Krishna.

Also, by reading about so many qualities and specialties to develop, your mind may begin to think that it seems too big and troublesome a job, leading towards hard-heartedness, and dry living. Please don’t be stuck with this stereotyped narrow vision. Whenever you enjoy something obviously you become oblivious of other things. It is the same with poetry, love, nature, scientific investigations and philosophy. Absorption is the same; when you taste a delicious item cooked by a friend the absorption is the same as a philosopher in his library. But no one blames you for being hard hearted, cold or alienating others. No, it only pleases you.

The same way when you are expressing the greatest bliss of the world or preparing for it, then naturally you will appear or sound or feel dry and harsh, but this is not so. Your sensitivity, compassion, observation, vitality, and aliveness grow a thousand fold. So don’t be disheartened. You arc definitely growing, enriching and climbing on a solid foundation for the first time in life. Believe it. As firm and strong your trust becomes so much homage descends, and then the entire Gita wisdom become so familiar to you that as soon as you read it you begin to feel it. There have been many great saints who became enlightened in just this way.

Somebody said, “I am. I am all this. And all this is That.”

It is as easy and simple, as nothing else is so easy and simple. Through sadhana, practice, all what we are doing is just unwinding the complexity of vasanas, samskaras, and karma. Cleaning off these dusts; untying the knots of the string.

Please know also that, all indications of “he” in this Gita translation also include “she”. In the soul, in the atma, in the true Self there is no distinction. Whatever is told is equally applied to all ladies of all nations, of all times. It is also the same with children, teens and old age persons. Age, gender, and number, don’t matter. This knowledge is for all children, teens, elderly, ladies, gents, americans, europeans, eskimos, whites, blacks, and everyone else too.

Lastly we would like you to know that this is not the only book of the author. He has presented psychological and yogic commentaries on the very first chapter of Gita in more than one thousand pages, entitled, The Divine Concerto. This great book is available through any bookstore or through ANBV Foundation directly. He has also given discourses on chosen verses of Gita composed in a book entitled Bliss Enlightenment.

If you would like to know the details of the historical background of Arjuna and the Pandavas, he has also written a book entitled, Fantastic World War of Antiquity. This latter book is a mini-Mahabharata. The very essence of history. If you would like to know the details of Sri Krishna’s life, please read his recent books, Lord of Love, Lord of Bliss, & Lord of Beauty. For further knowledge and understanding there are dozens of other titles such as Lost in Oblivion, Thy Heart I Know Full Well, Garland of Love, Garland of Bliss, and yogic books such as Nine Tough Yogis, Upanisad Translations, Yoga Sutra Commentaries, etc. These all are but various composites of the eternal, timeless message expounded here in this Bhagavad Gita.

Thank you very much.

The Editor

Introduction

I am not trying to solve modern man’s problems by turning the clock back to an older era, vice-versa, I am trying to solve modern man’s problems by transcending the clock, entering the timeless realm of consciousness through this timeless message which appeared in the world in 3000 B.C.

Life is a great laboratory in which finer and finest experiments are going on. On the finest levels the experiment itself transforms into experience. And experience in its light of maturity, transcending all, embraces the Absolute Reality.

Our brain has approximately ten to twenty billion brain cells. All are interconnected. They produce electrical signals of fluctuating frequency, known as brain waves. While working on conscious mind level one remains in the Beta wave length. When working on the subconscious level, Alpha and Thcla waves commence. When you are hostile and cold blooded. Alpha activity is dramatically decreased; when you are warm and creative, enthusiastic and vital (hey increase. Delta wave signals a much deeper and creative experience of life.

If you understand this Gita wisdom, it is very likely that the reputed wonders of Alpha could be effectively harnessed by you. The famed American mystic Edgar Caycc said, “You get to heaven on the arms of the people you’ve helped.” The essence of the most part of Gita’s sermon is, “Doing skillfully your duty, risking everything, expecting nothing.” This is the way to be free from bounds of ropes of negative pathological instincts. Then highest wisdom is at hand, and this alone offers freedom, which is eternal and everlasting.

Jean Paul Sartre’s patent idea is, “We arc condemned to be free.” He describes how noble and aristocratic was his grandpa who look care of his mother and he after the death of his father. To finance the household he took a job in his old age. Very generous and praise worthy. But Sartre’s penetrating eyes unfold more than regular eyes can see. The lerriblc narrowness of heart and mind, along with the helplessness of his mother even in the safe shelter of her own father’s home. Those were the days when physical and sexual abuse had not begun, but still, a subtle exploitation, hypocrisy, and selfishness was going under the banner and label of high sounding liberal principles. Sartre saw it. Hearing about it startles us really and makes us wonder how hypocritical and selfish our own society is, hiding under the guise of charity and philanthropy. It may be going on only simply because no one has pointed it out. Then maybe Krishna is right; but too much right may be too scary.

In Sartre’s novel “Nausea” the main character Roqucnlin says, “This nausea is now not only inside me but I am the one who is within it. Things are divorced from their name. Existence is purposeless, meaningless, and shapeless…” And he goes on. But all what he is saying is what one feels during the vairagya and pratyahar practicing stages of yoga. Only his case it was shrouded in a negative light and in yoga it is seen through a positive vision.

“God is dead, we have murdered him - You & I. We are all his murderers.” Nietzsche pours out his heart from the mouth of a raving madman who was searching God in the crowded market place, holding a lantern in the broad daylight.

What he means to say is simply the death of our complex, shaky belief in God, which to Karl Marx is, but an intoxication of opium. He talks of death of modern man’s hypocrisy of God’s belief, but makes God more alive through the conception of a superman. No matter how Aclolf Hitler perverted and deformed this idea and tried to be the one and failed, still through the spirit of Nietzsche there opens a wonderful door to understand (iila and the God whom he couldn’t make alive. Tli.it < iod is right line in this Clita, the only one alive, enlivening all and everything of (he woild, through love, life and rejuvenation.

We find in European history all along since 5(X) BC, Heraclitus talking against Pamienides, Socrates talking against the democrats, Plato against the Sophists, Descartes against the Empiricists and Scholastics, Hume against Descartes, and Kant against Hume. German Romanticism, philosophy of Enlightenment, Beethoven and Wordsworth among these wonders here comes George Wilhelm Hegel and his historicity of philosophy makes such a pool that embraces all.

The same way in India, Shankara talked against Buddha, Ramanuja talked against Shankara, Madhva moves apart from Ramanuja, Chaitanya drifts still further. Haridas & Harivamsha explore still new wonders far away from the past. But all these and many more are floating on the nectarine pool of Krishna’s Gita. Some blossomed into fragrant (lowers, others by now have spread into thousands. Others siill are in seed form, still others in bud form. But they are all here in this Gita. And that’s why I chose; I thought, let me translate the Gita. And here I go….

Before I go I offer my heart-felt, warmest thanks to Amandaji who so nicely edited the language and placed them in the form of free verses. I offer my warm thanks to Shyamasundar for fixing beautiful music in my poem Gita-Experience. May Lord of Gita bestow blessing upon them.

…His Mighty Boat

& Splashing of His Ore…

I was then so ecstatic eight years old about as I was picking up Gita from the hands of my reverend father, contained in a shining small silver box. I ran down among the bushes of marigold plants and green grass carpeted lawn in the garden beside our home and opened page after page… I do not know what I read but great ecstacy filled my heart great love inundated. I became so deeply in love with each of those plants and trees and flowers and sky above as I loved myself… What I read then, - now I know, and that’s what I have put in this book, page after page after page wonderful, amazing, sparkling diamonds and emeralds and sapphires of Gita-wisdom.

The easiest, simplest, integrating, illuminating translation of gita is in your hand. Please enjoy it as each sip of your morning coffee; taste, relish and relax in it; make it your own. As much as it grows into your own your true Self will shine in effulgence of peace, love and wisdom infinite.

When I was about ten or twelve I started learning to sing verses of Gita and understand the meaning. My reverend father would speak at times at length and the whole house would become an audience. There was a series of introductory verses I remember now faintly in which the war was described as a fierceful river as if an Amazon or Congo, and all warriors were dangerous water beasts, water whirls, ebbs and tides. Anyone can devour in a second. But then there was a boat and Krishna was sailing it, Arjuna was sitting on it, all safe.

The river of war is the river of life; urges of lust, anger, jealousy, greed, boredom, loneliness, are the water beasts; anytime, from anywhere they attack and there goes a way to instant downfall forever. But then here comes Krishna sailing the mighty boat of Gita, who picks you up and sets you comfortably in the boat’s state room, this luxury cruiseship of Gita wisdom.

Life is still a fierceful river full of beasts not outside but inside. From inside they take over your brain, your heart, your body, and as if an electrode has been placed in the head and programmed accordingly, you become an enemy of your own liberation. Enemies change shifts. One after another, non-stop it goes on all life. Our attachments, greed, stubbornness, angers, prejuditions, egoisms, are beastly notions inducing drugs of their obsessions in our system, which they rule over.

Now enough time has been wasted, we’ve got to shout out - “O Krishna”,”Oh Krishnam Lordam, come, come dear, bring your boat please…” And lo, there, shimmering, shining, smiling he looms up he is coming, coming to pick you up. Now you are on the boat. Page after page after page reading, absorbing, feel the splashing sound of Krishna’s ore, his presence, his perfumes…

While all over and all around there are those beasts, still roaming, hungry, fieceful, frightening on all sides, trying to get you, but they are in the water and you are in the boat of Gitanic Wisdom under Krishna’s mighty protection, who is your own purified intuition… Again it is you who have to make your this intuition mightier and mightier. His recognition, His formal acquaintance, and this Gitanic wisdom is the way…

In His Sacred Remembrance

“The world is a shoreless, bottomless pit of mire. As soon as you are born and become trained in social manners and customs the sticky, soggy, ugly stinking mud of ignorance- a misunderstanding almost about everything, starts entangling you in its trap… You’re stuck; but can’t leave, can’t escape, can’t avoid. Because, you can’t live without this world. Even if you go to - Himalayas, America, or Heaven, world is there too. Although in another form. But world is world. And world is thickly painted with worldliness. And world withoul worldliness is Liberation, is a sigh of Aha experience. You’ve to be free from worldliness while yet remaining here in this world. You’ve to be in snow-white suit even being in thick, black painted world, remaining absolutely unstained. You’ve to learn and master the art of somersault.”

That is what my Reverend Father said- He said this when I was little while watching a circus,

“Listen Jiwan, - You’ve got to do somersault. And Gita is the art of grandest somersault from the trapeze of intellectual skillfulness spinning towards progressive skies of discretion, intuition, mystica & cosmica consciensia. Make an astounding somersault. A wise man who understands the Gita well is a catcher, who is always ready with his safety net. You’ve got to learn to spin with the speed of 85 miles an hour. Be accurate and precise in timing. Be well prepared so that you’ll never land on your neck, or head.

“And listen,” -he said

“Being warmly interested in the wisdom of Gita is the peak of maturity and that is the secret of intellectual height. If only Gita becomes the necklace gem of your life that is getting onto the trapeze…”

So Hi readers,

Are you on the trapeze—-?

Then here we begin our somersault…

Learning the Art of Somersault

Sir, how to somersault?

Please study each Chapter with timeless, reathless and bodiless intensity. Each of these Eighteen Chapters are varieties of spinning in the air. You have to be beyond body-consciousness to be on the trapeze. Then somersault either in the air of immortal love or submergence into Bramhic experience.

Where is the audience?

The whole world is the audience. When you land back on body-consciousness you are the most needed person by everybody. Then you are the actor, you are the Hero, you are the living messenger of God and the redeemer of the world.

What if Gita is too difficult for me and I can’t understand it?

Then just sit cross-legged, spine straight, and meditate. You are doing actual somersault and Lord Krishna is standing there with the safety net.

What if I cannot sit cross-legged?

Then be in whatever pose you can sit in and visualize like that.

What if I can’t do that?

Then, whatever you know of Gita, just preaches it to others. Win many souls for Lord Krishna. In Chapter Eighteen he has promised that he will take care of you if you do this. So do this.
